The works of the Belgian surrealist painter René Magritte are unquestionably among the most recognizable images of the twentieth century. Magritte¹s paintings create a surreal vision, utilizing familiar objects such as apples, cigars, birds, pipes, and bowler hats. This intriguing program explores Magritte¹s world, and presents many of the fascinating images created by this extraordinary artist. Magritte was born in Lessines, Belgium in 1898. He studied at the Académie Royale des Beaux-Arts, Brussels. His first one-man exhibition was in Brussels in 1927. As one of the most important surrealist painters, Magritte's dream-like images combine a realistic technique with an "absurd" consciousness to convey the terror of an incomprehensible world. He used the juxtaposition of ordinary objects and the precision of his technique to create feelings of unrest in the viewer. The unusual titles of his paintings rarely describe the actual subject matter, but serve to add new dimensions to his work. This juxtaposition is frequently termed magic realism, of which Magritte was the prime exponent. Magritte's work was first exhibited in the United States in New York City in 1936. He also had two retrospectives in New York, one at the Museum of Modern Art in 1965, and the other at the Metropolitan Museum of Art in 1992. René Magritte died in 1967.
