Pros:
Actual WWI fighter pilots tell their stories.
Cons:
A little dry at times.
|
|
This is a must see for anyone who wants to understand the character of the first of the flying aces. Footage of actual dogfights along with extensive narrative by the pilots who pioneered war in the skies put this documentary in a class of its own.

Pros:
This film will make you believe you can do the impossible.
Cons:
There was only one Seabiscuit.
|
|
The bridge between a broken down nation of able bodied men waiting in soup lines and a nation brave and bold enough to free the world of fascism was built by a few notorious role models. America found its heart through characters like FDR, Joe Louis, Jessie Owens, Lou Gehrig and a race horse named Sea Biscuit. If you are lucky enough to get a chance to see it, you may find your own heart too.

Pros:
An inspiration to anyone, male or female.
Cons:
A slightly biased but provocative film.
|
|
Quality footage combined with narrative by the women who pioneered aviation make for a superb film. Every question you might have about early women pilots going into this film will be answered in just 56 minutes.

Pros:
This film manages to capture the character of the brave.
Cons:
Not enough intellectual weight for a college class.

We have an insatiable appetite for WWII documentaries not because we think there may yet one fact we haven’t learned about military tactics or political figures or outstanding generals of another era. Nor do we watch them because we have too much time on our hands, nor to unwind after a hectic day. War documentaries won’t entertain that way, or not usually. But this is a delightful film precisely because it gives us what we want. We want to see heroes of another time, real American heroes. Relevant WWII footage is played while actual paratroopers of the 507th tell their stories. These soldiers were misdropped on D-Day some 20 miles wide of their target, and went on to fight one of the bloodiest small arms battles in history over a French causeway. Later these same paratroopers were sent into the Battle of the Bulge, and they were dropped yet again behind enemy lines to be the first of the Allies onto German soil. They led the march to victory in Berlin. Two thirds of the original 2004 men of the 507th were lost in the 4 weeks of the war. Captions give all the relevant historical facts--and all this in 56 minutes
